Depression in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease at Tertiary Care Hospital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Abstract
Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a risk factor for the development of depression. Depression is a common mental health problem accompanied by a high degree of emotional distress and functional impairment. So it is very important to study the frequency of depression and its severity in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients and for this reason, the present study was conducted. Methodology: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted at the Department of Pulmonology, Ayub Teaching Hospital Abbottabad from July 2019 to June 2020. A total of 179 patients with COPD were included in the study. Following the detailed medical history and physical examination, patients were asked to answer a questionnaire, Becks Depression Inventory-13 (BDI-13). The answers were marked to obtain a final score. Results: Out of total 179 patients, 59 (32.96%) were found to have depression. Among the depressed patients, the majority were having mild to moderate severity (n=48). No significant association was observed between age and gender and depression in COPD patients (p > 0.05). Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of depression among patients with COPD and careful evaluation and treatment of associated depression should be included as part of comprehensive management for these patients.
