OUTCOMES OF PERICARDIECTOMY IN TERTIARY TEACHING HOSPITAL OF KHYBER PAKHTUNKHWA

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to find outcomes of patients undergoingPericardiectomy in a tertiary care teaching hospital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.Methodology: This was a Descriptive cross sectional study performed inCardiovascular Department Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar. Data wascollected from October 2009 to October 2014 with sample size of 103.Sampling technique was non probability consecutive. All patients withconstrictive pericarditis were included in the study.Results : Total 50 patients were studied in period of 5 years from October 2009to October 2014.Out of total 30 (60%) patients were male. Mean age of thestudy population was 48± 12 years. Tuberculosis was the major cause ofconstrictive pericarditis in these patients. Mortality associated withpericardectomy was 10%. Morbidity and mortality was mostly related to lowoutput stat with or with out right heart failure.Conclusion:-Pericardectomy is associated with high mortality and morbidity inspite of advances in pre and post surgical care.
