Abstract

Introduction: Multi drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is a serious infectious public health problem. Despite its high prevalence in Pakistan, its socio-demographic determinants are not being addressed properly. Methods: A descriptive cross sectional study was conducted in TB Sanatorium Kotri for the study period of two months. The objectives of study were to determine its frequency & socio-demographic risk factors among total admitted patients. Results: The multidrug resistant tuberculosis was observed in 28.75% of cases while 71.25% cases were found to be Non-MDR-TB. There was male preponderance among MDR-TB. Age, gender, literacy status & marital status revealed statistically insignificant association with occurrence of MDR-TB; while belonging to lower socio-economic group & living in overcrowded houses showed statistically significant relation with MDR-TB.Conclusions: The study concluded with the recommendation that the patients’ socio-demographic factors should be particularly addressed in high burden MDR-TB country like Pakistan in order to reduce its burden.
